Life is like a book.
There is a prologue. It gives details to an earlier story or existence. It lays background detail and sets the stage for the rest of our book. We all have a prologue. We may not yet know it, it may not yet be discovered, but we do.
But the book isn’t just about the prologue, is it? We have our chapters to write, the plot and subplots to create, characters and relationships to develop, and eventually the epilogue to write. And yet the story may not even end there. There can be sequels to write as well. A never ending story? Alternate endings? The book is open to endless possibilities.
That’s the beauty of writing. You are the author. You are the creator. No one else. You decide what that prologue is. You decide how the ending plays out. You can make the revisions necessary. You can discover it yourself. And often times as you begin to write, you enter a path of discovery and realize that your story deserves or has more detail to offer. So you add to it. You re-write it.
The beauty of this is, it’s YOUR book. You write it the way you want it to be. No one else can decide your story.
There are details and sub plots that sometimes write themselves. An impromptu chapter may surface once in awhile. But they aren’t set in stone. Sometimes a little revision here, or an addition there and suddenly the chapter takes a twist. Again, it’s your story, you write it.
Life’s journeys often take us down paths that we ourselves do not understand. Often times your story will drive you down unexpected paths of self discovery. We take unexpected turns into dark caverns and unknown paths that were not scripted ahead of time.
Life should not be scripted. We write our own script. There are times when the ink just flows in such a way we get lost in the very book we are writing. We engulf ourselves in the chapter we are writing, and forget there is still a book to be completed.
Sometimes a little adlib is necessary. Sometimes circumstances, fate, may throw a kink in things. When it does, we accept the beautiful additions and build upon or around them.
In the end, we will have created a masterpiece that will have everything from drama to action, perhaps a love story, or even an ill-fated tragedy. The thing to remember is be proud of your masterpiece. Have no regrets. Leave it all out there. Tell YOUR story. And let it shine.
We are the authors. We are the master editors. The executive producers. We hold the power of the pen and ink.
