Bruised, broken, tattered and torn, he searches deep within, and gathers what strength remains. He must pick himself up. Depressed and frustrated, the last bit of hope that remains in him hangs by a very thin thread, causing him to question his own existence.
An old man greets him. His appearance is worn. His clothing is tattered and torn, very similar to his own, barely hiding the wrinkled and callous skin that is covered with bruises and battle scars. The hair on his head, what remains of it, is grisly and white. From underneath his furrowed brow and heavy eyelids, came the warm, soft, inviting gaze of his rich blue eyes. His wrinkled, sagging, yet defined cheek bones give way to a slight grin.
The old man greets him, and, taking him firmly by the arm, leads him to a large, steel door. The door is similar, in nature, to that of a large bank vault. It had one large wheel in the center, that, when turned counter-clockwise, opened the door.
The old man slowly, with great effort, pulls the massive door open, revealing a long, dark, drab hallway. Dark, long, shadows draped the corridor. It wasn’t uninviting by any stretch of the imagination. It was more… an uncertainty.
The hallway was musky and dank. There was a slight draft coming from the other end. It made him shiver with unease. A chill crept up his spine, and an eery feeling overcame him.
At the opposite end of the hallway, barely visible was another door of similarly large fashion. The door was cracked slightly and a pin size light of pure brilliance escaped into the hallway, just enough to light the way down the dark hallway.
Hesitant, the young man takes a careful step back.
“What is it?” he asks the old man.
“Your future, your destiny, all your life’s ventures lie behind that door.” Comes the response. “The impossible, the possible, your dreams, all your fantasies yet to be realized. All of them right there waiting to be experienced. The brilliance behind that door is yours to claim.”
“Why is the hallway so dark? Why is it so long and? And why does it contain an air of uncertainty?”
“It represents the road to your dreams and fantasies. It is the path to your destiny. It is dark and uncertain because it has not been traveled yet. It has not been experienced. It has yet to experience the companionship of a traveler.”
“What must I do?”
“Well, the choice is yours. Either pursue that which awaits you, make your dreams a reality, make your fantasies come true, write the story of your own destiny, or be lost in darkness forever. You either realize your destiny and greatness or submit to the sadness and dreariness of a life less traveled.”
The young man then looks at the old man puzzled.
“Your appearance would suggest you have traveled the road of dreariness sadness yourself. You appear to have wandered as a lonely man. Have you realized your destiny? Have you attained your dreams?”
“Yes, yes I have!” Comes the firm reply.
“My appearance is a mere testament of the hard work it takes to make your dreams come true. Life and all it’s adventures don’t just fall in your lap. The brilliance of life is attainable and grand. But it is not easy to achieve. It requires perseverance and effort. Effort beyond that which you have ever experienced. You will have to dig deep within to discover a strength of unnatural power and ability.”
“But,” the old man looks sternly at the young man, “you mustn’t give up. No matter the difficulty, don’t give up. If you hold true to yourself, persevere and stand tall, the reward is immeasurable. Treasures beyond anything you can dream of.”
The young man looks at the old man with deep respect and admiration. With every ounce of courage he could muster, he thanks the old man, shakes his hand firmly, and proceeds forward through the doorway.
“A word of warning.” The old man grasps him by the arm.
“Once you enter, there’s no turning back. You either press forward, or lose your way and wander aimlessly. Once this door closes, a chapter closes in the book of your life and a new chapter begins. It’s yours to write or rewrite. Make it a good one.”
Once again, the young man thanks him and turns to begin his new journey…
